Great Churches Equip.
A reminder is overdue as we are over half-way through our 10 post series on great churches. First, by “great,” we mean healthy, and by healthy, we mean a church that intentionally makes disciples who makes disciples of Jesus.
A clarification is also in order. By “churches” we mean church leaders, starting with the lead pastor and staff.
In Ephesians 4:11-12 we are challenged as leaders…
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Quoting this is the easy part. Let’s get practical. What does it mean “to equip his people for works of service?”
In simple terms, volunteers and staff alike know what they are responsible for (aka, The “why?” and the “win) and, more importantly, get the training and resources they need to serve and lead with excellence.
How is this done? It’s done on purpose. Let’s break this down…
- Answer the “why?” Be sure your team leaders and volunteers know why they are doing what they have been asked to do. Do you know the “why?” If not, figure it out in simple terms.
- Clarify the “win.” Make sure they can finish the sentence, “Our team is winning when we/people….” Can you finish this sentence? If not, figure it out in simple terms.
- Equip them with excellence. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel! From conferences to retreats, to on-line simulcasts, podcast subscriptions, to ongoing coaching relationships and so much more, equipping is never seen as an expense to be avoided.
Training is an investment in kingdom expansion through well-prepared leaders.
