Here is Tip #8 for Ministry Leaders in 2016…
Make more margin.
We live in a world and lead in a culture of “Max!” We idolize people who live at their limits and lead “on the edge.” The problem with this is found in the fact that far too many exceed their limits and go over the edge… and take others with them. Even those that manage to somehow keep it together are too often stressed out, burnt out, over-stimulated, over-medicated and generally unfulfilled. If this is living life to the “max…” I’ll pass.
“Margin is the space between your current pace and your limits.”
Simply put, life is better with more room. “When margin decreases, stress levels increase, focus narrows, and relationships suffer.” So important to quality of life is this concept that God originally made it the “law of the land.” It’s called, the Sabbath (See Exodus 208 & Deuteronomy 5:15). He even modeled this from the beginning by creating the universe in 6 days and resting on the 7th. Hey, if it’s good enough for the God of the universe, it’s probably good enough for us.
Notice we said, “Make more margin?” This won’t just happen. Our good intentions just aren’t good enough. We will have to be intentional about life management when it comes to our time, our emotions, resources, finances, and more. This means saying “No,” and slowing down, living and leading by a measured example as we rediscover abundant life and the relationships vital to it by creating space and room to breathe.
Don’t live and lead “to the max!” Live and lead well… with margin.
