Servant Leader,

Lesson 19: Encourage.

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25

We are almost half-way through this corporate season of prayer and fasting. And, like a long-distance runner who is just hitting “the wall,” perhaps you know someone who could use a little help keeping on keeping on? Maybe it’s you?

The Irish statesman, Edmund Burke was quoted as saying, “Applaud us when we run, console us when we fall, cheer us when we recover, but for God’s sake, let us pass on!” I’ll admit to needing all of these and more to “pass on” and go the distance. I’ve been doing a little running as of late and when I get about half way, sometimes I feel like just plain passing out. It’s then that I turn to my trusty iPhone and call up an old tune that always get’s me through… “Second Wind” by Petra! The point is, I am encouraged by the song of others and soon I get past the pain and into a steady pace that carries me through to the finish.

There is an added bonus to applauding, consoling, cheering and otherwise encouraging others on along the way. “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25

I can’t fully explain how this works, I only know it does. As I take the time to cheer someone else on, I am cheered up. I gain a perspective by encouraging others that soon turns into peace that often turns into all out joy. And, this makes me want to find someone else and encourage them as well! Not a bad way to pass a day?

So, again, who do you know that could use some encouragement? Whether they are a part of this 40 day effort of prayer and fasting or not, find someone you can cheer up and cheer on and God will give the grace for them and you to keep on keeping on!
