Lesson 10: Self Control
We live in an age where indulgent celebrities dominate the media. The only thing that seems to rival their appetite for the things of this world is the hunger the masses have to follow their self-indulgent spiral into self-destruction. This should prompt some questions for the Body of Christ… How are we modeling the selflessness of Christ? What does living to serve God and others look like on a daily basis? How can we not only gather for annual work camps and support missionaries, but also model missions as a lifestyle beginning right in our own home towns?
There is much to be said concerning Jesus’ counter-culture call… “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. ” Mark 8:34. Perhaps too much is said only with too little emphasis on the truth that follows… “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” Mark 8:35-36.
As you fast and pray during this 40 days, focus on the cross and the cost. Yes, there is much to be given up in this life to bear Christ’s image and bring Him greater glory. This is often lost in modern evangelicalism. The greater truth is that there is infinitely more to be gained as His glory is revealed in us! “O, the wonderful cross!”
