Lesson 2 – Love.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love…” Galatians 5:22a
If anything can ignite the fires of the Great Commission in a movement it is following the Great Commandments… to love God and love others. However, before it can spread movementally, or even in a local church, it has to begin in me. A couple of questions we all might reflect on are… “Am I loving who Christ loved? And, am I loving how He loved?”
“I picked up a man from the street, and he was eaten up alive from worms. Nobody could stand him, and he was smelling so badly. I went to him to clean him, and he asked, ‘Why do you do this?’ I said, ‘Because I love you.'” – Mother Teresa
Jesus loved the unlovable; those that others couldn’t bring themselves to love. Jesus loved without reservation and did so knowing that so many would never love Him in return. Still, He loved and still He loves. What is humbling is the fact that apart from His grace, I am the unlovable one and I am the one with no capacity to love Him or others in return. Without His saving, redeeming work on the cross and the power of His resurrection, I would be lost in my sin and motivated only by self.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
I am praying for a revival of love during this 40 days. I know this revival must begin in me and then spread to others as I look to the Holy Spirit for what it takes to love who and how Jesus loved. Join me in asking yourself one more question… “Who does God want me to love today?”
